As the District of Columbia marks the significant milestone of 50 years under Home Rule, the city gears up to swear in new council members on January 2, 2025. The day promises not only to usher in new leadership but also to serve as a celebration of half a century since the first elected Mayor, Walter E. Washington, and the Council took their oaths. The commemoration and swearing-in ceremonies are set to take place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, according to the Council of the District of Columbia.
The event opened to the public at 8:30 A.M., with the official proceedings kicking off an hour later at 9:30 A.M. It's a notable day that aims to not just look back but also strategically plan and to look forward. Renowned hosts Kojo Nnamdi and Tom Sherwood of WAMU will lead the ceremonies, as noted by the site. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Chairman Phil Mendelson, and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton are all scheduled to address the gathering before the actual swearing-in of council members commences around 10:00 A.M.
A notable list of elected officials are to be sworn in on this day, including Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto, Ward 4's Janeese Lewis George, Ward 7 representative Wendell Felder, Ward 8's Trayon White, Sr., and At-Large Councilmembers Christina Henderson and Robert C. White, Jr. Following this, the newly constituted Council will convene at the John A. Wilson Building for an Organizational Meeting. The meeting, which is open to the public, will also be broadcast on local television and made available for online viewership via Zoom.
Later this afternoon, the celebration is set to continue back at the convention center, with the swearing-in ceremonies for the Statehood Delegation, State Board of Education, and Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners slated to begin at approximately 2:30 P.M. "The Council has organized important projects and events to commemorate Home Rule’s 50th Anniversary," as stated on their website. Among these are a virtual reunion of past and present Councilmembers, Mayors, Attorneys General, and Delegates, alongside a video that reflects on the District's achievements and challenges over the past five decades and its prospects for further advancement in governance.
