In a recent press release, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington D.C. announced their firearm recovery efforts for the week stretching from December 23 to December 30, 2024. According to MPDC, detectives and officers managed to confiscate a total of 27 firearms across various neighborhoods in the District, indicating an ongoing battle against illegal arms possession.
While the MPD acknowledges that the list provided is not exhaustive, it serves as a snapshot into a weeklong operation aimed at reducing armed violence. The recovered firearms include a range of handguns, rifles, and even a “Ghost Gun.” During this period, targeted arrests were made concerning individuals carrying a pistol without a license among other firearm- and drug-related offenses. A 38-year-old suspect, Janson Bionte LaSalle, was apprehended on Benning Road, carrying a Taurus G3 9mm caliber handgun without a license, among other charges.
Efforts to keep the community safe from gun-related incidents are shared between specialized MPD units and patrol officers. The department also stressed the importance of community involvement in reporting illegal firearm activity. By incentivizing such reports with a monetary reward of up to $2,500 for tips that lead to arrests and seizures, the police department aims to foster collaboration with the public to enhance neighborhood safety, as detailed by MPD website.
The range of weapons, including a Sig Sauer P-320, Glock models 19, 43, and 23, along with an American Tactical GSG-16 rifle, where officials recovered several in just a single incident, and their accompanying arrests reflects the diversity of illegal firearms permeating the streets.
