A 41-year-old Wayne County woman faces charges after apparently attempting to smuggle contraband into a Michigan prison. Frances Ramirez-Huerta of Redford was arraigned following what the Michigan State Police and Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) described as coordinated efforts to thwart smuggling into the Chippewa Correctional Facility in Kincheloe. According to ClickOnDetroit, authorities grew suspicious of Ramirez-Huerta when a prisoner exhibited unusual behavior during her visitation on January 11.
In a discovery that police claim followed the suspect behavior, surveillance footage allegedly showed Ramirez-Huerta placing items in the waistband of her pants and covertly handing them over to the inmate. After MDOC officials observed the exchange, a search of the prisoner revealed 140 suboxone strips, a second bundle composed of seven grams of marijuana flower, and two SIM cards for cellphones, as reported by 9&10 News.
As a result of the investigation, Ramirez-Huerta has been charged with multiple offenses, including Controlled Substance-Creation/Delivery of an Analogue, Controlled Substance-Delivery/Manufacture of Marijuana, Controlled Substance-Maintaining a Drug House, Furnishing Contraband to a Prisoner in Prison and Furnishing a Cell Phone to a Prisoner. She is lodged in the Chippewa County Jail, where Upper Michigan's Source confirms that her bond has been set at $1,000 with specific conditions, advancing her to a next court date set for January 27.
