West Sacramento is once again leading the charge in California's sustainability efforts by exceeding its composting goals for 2024. According to a recent announcement, the City surpassed its target set by SB 1383, procuring over 2,818 tons of compost before the year's end. This achievement was bolstered by strategies such as the CalRecycle grant-funded compost giveaways at New Roots Farm Community Garden and the "Compost for All" delivery program to local residences.
The "Compost for All" initiative has clearly resonated with residents, as the city has reached its target with weeks to spare. Looking ahead to 2025, the Sustainability Division plans to continue these successful programs, even as the composting target rises to a robust 4,335 tons. Expanding their toolkit, the City, in collaboration with the Parks Department, has invested in compost-spreading equipment designated for municipal landscaping use, with the goal of seamlessly integrating these practices into the city's maintenance routine.
Compost is not just about waste reduction; it has an array of environmental benefits that shouldn't be overlooked.
