A Sacramento-area vintage and handmade goods marketplace is taking over two former Joann Fabric and Crafts storefronts, planting its largest-ever location inside the old Elk Grove store on Bond Road while opening a second new outpost at the Folsom Premium Outlets. Bliss Marketplace expects to open the 35,000-square-foot Elk Grove store by the end of September, with a grand opening ceremony for the Folsom location planned for October.
According to the Sacramento Bee, the Elk Grove store will take over the space at 8509 Bond Road, while the Folsom venue will occupy a 22,000-square-foot space at 13000 Folsom Boulevard inside the outlet center. Bliss Marketplace plans to host more than 200 vendors at the Elk Grove location alone, according to the Bee's report from reporter Camryn Dadey, the paper's Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova watchdog reporter. The company sells vintage treasures and handmade goods from local artisans and small businesses, according to its website, and also hosts events and workshops for shoppers.
Filling the Void Joann Left Behind
The Elk Grove and Folsom expansions are only possible because of a nationwide retail collapse. Joann Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2025 for the second time in less than a year, having previously emerged from an earlier Chapter 11 filing in March 2024 before filing again ten months later, according to ElevenFlo. The company went on to liquidate all roughly 800 of its store locations nationwide by May 2025.
Court documents from Joann's February 2025 liquidation filing listed 61 California store closures, a list that included both the Bond Road store in Elk Grove and the 1010 East Bidwell Street location in Folsom, as reported by Across California Patch. Craft retail giant Michaels later acquired Joann's intellectual property and private-label brands, but it did not take on any of Joann's physical store leases, according to a statement carried by KING 5, which meant the vacated storefronts sat open for new tenants.
Scaling Up From a 10,000-Square-Foot Footprint
Bliss Marketplace first opened its doors in 2016, and prior to this year's expansion, its largest operating store was a 10,000-square-foot space at 2529 Mercantile Drive in Rancho Cordova. The company has also operated stores at 390 Roseville Square in Roseville and at 2722 R Street in Sacramento, where its Midtown Bliss Home & Gifts location spans 10,000 square feet and features products from more than 119 independent local vendors.
At 35,000 square feet, the new Elk Grove location will be more than three times the size of those existing 10,000-square-foot storefronts, per the Folsom Times. That scale-up isn't happening in isolation — the vendor response has been strong enough that Bliss Marketplace announced in late August that its Folsom venue had already reached 85% vendor booth capacity, according to a post on the company's Facebook page. Vendor signups for the Folsom store were temporarily paused afterward pending interior demolition work.
A Long History of Turnover on Bond Road
The Bond Road shopping center has seen its share of anchor tenants come and go over the past decade. Historical court filings show the commercial center at 8509–8529 Bond Road previously lost major anchor tenants Sports Chalet in 2016 and Toys “R” Us in 2018, well before Joann's 2025 closure, according to filings before the California Supreme Court. Lease co-tenancy provisions at the site had previously triggered legal disputes tied to that turnover.
The Folsom Premium Outlets, where Bliss Marketplace's second new location is headed, is owned and operated by Simon Property Group and spans approximately 296,000 square feet of gross leasable area along U.S. Route 50, according to information from Simon Property Group. The open-air center houses more than 60 national and regional brand tenants. Hoodline previously reported on other commercial activity near that same corridor, including Estelle Bakery's planned Folsom move and the recent Perfumania opening at Arden Fair Mall.
Riding a Secondhand Shopping Boom
The push into larger storefronts also lines up with broader momentum in resale shopping. The U.S. secondhand market grew nearly four times faster than the broader retail clothing market in 2025, with global secondhand sales projected to reach $393 billion by 2030, according to ThredUp's 2026 Resale Report. That growth has been driven heavily by Gen Z and Millennial shoppers, the report notes.
Beyond the two new locations, Bliss Marketplace's footprint elsewhere in the region may shift too. The company could relocate its Rancho Cordova location to Citrus Heights when its lease expires in January 2027, according to a report from the Sacramento Business Journal cited by the Bee. For now, the company's attention is on getting the Elk Grove and Folsom stores open, with the Elk Grove location targeted for the end of this month and the Folsom grand opening ceremony planned for October.
