Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is opening up the state's lakes and rivers for a weekend of free fishing on January 18-19. This Free Fishing Weekend allows anglers young and old to drop a line on any body of water that's open for fishing, sans the need for a fishing license, trout, or salmon stamp, as first reported by the DNR. All other fishing regulations, including bag and size limits, along with species restrictions, remain firmly in place.
It's important to remember to check local stream conditions, as some locations may remain closed despite the event. For those trout streams that are open, the DNR specifies that "only artificial lures are allowed, and anglers must release to immediately all trout caught." For those planning to haul in their catch, the DNR advises a consultation of the Safe Eating Guidelines before consumption due to advisories impacting certain areas.
With winter in full swing, safety should be top of mind for anyone planning to venture onto the ice. According to the DNR, ice conditions are not monitored by the agency, so it's recommended to reach out to local bait shops or fishing clubs for the latest on thickness and stability. Essential safety gear includes water-resistant layers, waterproof boots with traction devices, spare hats, and gloves, as well as rescue ropes and ice claws for unexpected plunges.
No equipment? No problem. The DNR also offers loaner ice fishing gear at 19 tackle loaner sites state-wide. "Locations with ice fishing equipment will have an 'IF' next to their name," says the DNR. Although augers are not provided, intrepid fishermen can to typically make do with available tools such as sledgehammers or spud bars to open holes abandoned by others.
For those interested in borrowing equipment, contact your local loaner site in advance for details on hours and available gear. It's a wise move to plan ahead to ensure everything is ready for a successful fishing weekend. For more information, you can visit the DNR website at dnr.wisconsin.gov.
