
A tragic accident in Queens resulted in the death of a woman who was struck by an MTA bus early Thursday morning. The woman, believed to be between 50 and 60 years old, was walking along 31st Street in the Ditmars-Steinway neighborhood when the MTA bus, driven by a 48-year-old man, collided with her while she was crossing the street. The NYPD reported that the victim was in a crosswalk but did not have the walk signal at the time of the incident, as detailed by Gothamist.
According to a report by Patch, the emergency response was swift with the driver remaining on scene and the victim being promptly transported to Elmhurst hospital however her injuries proved fatal and she was pronounced deceased the police have not yet released her identity as the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident continues. In an update provided on Friday, the MTA stated that the bus driver had not been suspended but would be reassigned away from passenger service during the ongoing investigation.
The tragedy has prompted a detailed investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad, which is standard procedure in incidents involving fatalities and MTA vehicles. As of now, the bus driver is not facing charges.
