Two Yavapai County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) detention officers have been recognized for their quick actions that saved the life of an inmate. Patrick Colvin and Griffen Mazy received the prestigious Lifesaving Award during a special ceremony at the Prescott Criminal Justice Center, as reported by the sheriff's office on their official website.
In a commendable display of vigilance and swift response, Colvin and Mazy intervened to prevent an inmate from committing suicide in his cell in 2024. The ceremony, which took place late last year, saw the officers lauded in the presence of their families and colleagues. YCSO Detention Services Commander Brent Kimbriel, and Chief Deputy Jeff Newnum were on hand to present the awards, underscoring the gravity and nobility of the act.
The recognition of Colvin, who joined YCSO in 2011, reflects his journey beginning as a detention officer, then serving as a Detention Training Officer, before being promoted in 2017. Mazy, for his part, has been with the agency for less than two years but has already made a significant impact. According to the YCSO news release, these officers represent the commitment and dedication expected of those in the line of duty.
It is in moments like these, that the often-unseen heroics of law enforcement officials come to light. The YCSO has proudly shared this story of preservation and service, a testament to their ongoing efforts in ensuring safety within detention facilities. For Colvin and Mazy, this award not only represents a personal achievement but, it stands as a reminder of the lifesaving potential inherent in their daily responsibilities. Such instances of valor are what bridge the gap between the uniform and the community, demonstrating a shared value in the sanctity of life.
