In a verdict that brings an end to one of Yuba County's most disturbing cases, Charles Duane Brewer, Jr. was found guilty by a jury on multiple charges including the sexual abuse of a child younger than 10 years old. The Yuba County District Attorney's Office announced that Brewer was convicted on counts that span from sodomy of a child to production and possession of child pornography. According to a Facebook post from the Yuba County District Attorney's Office, Brewer's sentencing is scheduled for March 3, where he faces a potential 80 years to life behind bars.
The case's turning point came when the child's mother, dating Brewer at the time, discovered horrifying videos on Brewer's phone - culminating in his swift arrest. After a confrontation about the discovered material, Brewer responded with violence, but was eventually apprehended in Oroville by Butte County Sheriff deputies. The subsequent forensic investigation of Brewer's phone by the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Taskforce unearthed nearly 1,000 images of child pornography, some depicting the sexual assault of children by animals, as reported by the Yuba County District Attorney's Office.
During the three-day trial, testimony from the young victim, her mother, and a previous victim of Brewer painted a gruesome picture of the abuse that had taken place. A focal point of the case was the DNA evidence presented by DOJ Criminalist Miguel Macias who, even with limited resources, linked Brewer to the crime. Evidence included a careful examination by the Sutter Health BEAR Center and testimony from experts and officials intricately involved in the case, as stated by the Yuba County District Attorney's Office.
The Yuba County District Attorney's Office expressed gratitude not only towards the legal and investigative teams but also the community and jury members who were forced to confront the unsettling evidence to ensure that justice was served for the young victim. "Thank you, Jane, for being brave to testify about the horrible things that happened to you," the Yuba County District Attorney's Office posted. The collective effort from all fronts was instrumental in closing a bleak chapter for the victim and her family.
