This incident reflects broader trends in crime in the city. In 2024, New York City saw a 3% decrease in overall crime compared to the previous year. Murders fell by 3.8%, and robberies and burglaries also declined, according to FOX 5. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated, "While there were thousands fewer victims of major crimes—including shootings, murders, robberies, and other violent acts—in 2024, there is still much more work to be done to keep New Yorkers safe, to make them feel safe, and to improve their overall quality of life in the year ahead."
However, some crime categories rose. Rapes increased by 18.7%, and felony assaults went up by 4.9% compared to the previous year. The number of felony assaults on subways and mass transit systems rose by 65% from 2019 to 2024, according to the MTA.
