A devastating five-car pileup claimed the life of a 19-year-old Jacksonville man last night on Interstate 95 in Flagler County. The incident, occurring around 10:14 p.m. near mile marker 291, involved multiple vehicles and resulted in the tragic fatality and minor injuries to others.
Initial reports by Action News Jax, indicate that the collision was initiated by a 24-year-old Jacksonville man whose sedan ran off the roadway before re-entering traffic and striking the 19-year-old's car. This contact caused the teenager's vehicle to lose control, subsequently colliding with a third car. In the chaos that followed, the young man's vehicle spun out, ultimately coming to halt facing the wrong direction in northbound traffic where it was hit head-on.
The ClickOrlando report corroborates the sequence of these tragic events, detailing that after being rear-ended, the young driver's car sideswiped another vehicle before being struck by an oncoming pickup truck. Another pickup truck was later discovered to have sustained damage from the collision as well.
According to a crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol and detailed by First Coast News, the St. Augustine man driving the car sideswiped by the teenager's vehicle and his 11-year-old passenger were fortunate enough to not suffer any injuries in the crash. The reports further noted that the 19-year-old who lost his life was the only person involved in the crash that did not have on a seatbelt, underscoring a sorrowful note of what might have been preventable had safety protocols been strictly observed.
The other individuals involved received minor injuries, including the 24-year-old driver who initiated the crash and the 60-year-old man driving the pickup that collided with the 19-year-old's car head-on. The 57-year-old driver of the second pickup truck incurred no injuries. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement continues to investigate the precise cause of the initial loss of control that led to the fatal chain of events.
