An 88-year-old man, identified as Joe Luey Fulbright from Connelly Springs, was pronounced dead after a collision in Burke County yesterday morning. The incident, reported by WBTV, occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Rhodhiss Road, near Monteith Lane.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol told QC News, the crash happened when Fulbright, in a 2012 Buick Lacrosse, was trying to turn left out of a driveway and pulled out in front of a westbound 2007 Dodge Dakota.
According to WSOC-TV, Fulbright was airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The other driver, 78-year-old James Robinson Jr. of Granite Falls, was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Troopers have informed that they have decided not to file any charges in the case, as initial assessments indicated that neither impairment nor speed were to directly blame for the accident.
The scene of the accident remained closed for approximately one hour during the investigation. This closure, as per standard protocol, facilitated the Highway Patrol's preliminary examination of the events leading up to the fatal crash. No further disruptions to traffic on Rhodhiss Road have been reported following the reopening of the thoroughfare.
Details concerning the specific dynamics of the crash, such as vehicle speeds or the mechanics of the incident, have not been released at this point in time. The State Highway Patrol's statement, which was echoed across multiple local reports, consistently stressed that impairment and speed did not seem to significantly contribute, aiming to provide a clear picture of the tragic circumstances. Whether further investigations will to unfold additional factors remains to be seen.
