As the temperatures dip in Atlanta, the city has put measures in place to ensure its residents have a warm place to retreat. According to a statement from the City of Atlanta, warming centers have opened to accommodate individuals seeking respite from the cold weather, particularly as frigid conditions are expected to persist.
The warming centers opened yesterday at 8:00 p.m. and operated through the early morning hours until 6:00 a.m. today. The initiative will resume this evening at 8:00 p.m. and continue until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. One of the designated warming center locations is the Central Park Recreation Center at 400 Merritts Ave. NE, Atlanta, 30308. Additional locations are also available for those in need.
To specifically cater to women and children during the harsh weather, Selena S. Butler Park at 98 WM Holmes Borders Dr SE, Atlanta, GA 30312, opened its doors exclusively for them. Meanwhile, the Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Ln NW, Atlanta, GA 30331, was prepared to serve as an overflow location as temperatures dropped and the demand for shelter increased, as per the city's official announcement.
Transportation to these warming havens will be made available nightly at 8:00 p.m. from the Gateway Center, ensuring that those in need can access the facilities, Fulton County will coordinate return transportation from the Gateway Center once the centers are no longer active. It's important for potential visitors to stay informed, as activation times could shift in response to the updated National Weather Service forecast.
