A donut shop employee in Clinton Township, Michigan, responded to an attempted armed robbery by shooting the suspect, who later died from his injuries, police said. The incident took place yesterday at Golden Donuts, located at 34155 Harper Avenue. CBS News Detroit reports that the police were called to the scene around 12:45 p.m. following a report of an armed robbery in progress.

As detailed by the Detroit Free Press, an unidentified man, reportedly in his mid-30s, entered the shop to allegedly commit an armed robbery. Brandishing a firearm and demanding cash, the situation quickly escalated when an employee, armed and confronted with the immediate threat, discharged their weapon, striking the man.

Fleeing the scene, the wounded suspect managed to drive away only to crash his SUV a short distance away at a Sunoco gas station located at 15 Mile and Harper. According to FOX 2, emergency services transported him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Clinton Township Police Captain Brandon Blake told FOX 2 Detroit in an interview, "Any loss of life is tragic, I'm sure this gentleman had a family to some degree, and the unfortunate part is he lost his life committing a crime that quite frankly put somebody else's life into jeopardy." The employee involved in the shooting was interviewed by authorities and released, pending a further investigation that Detroit police indicate may lean towards self-defense.
