In a decisive stand against perceived overreach, Attorney General Mayes and a band of attorneys general from eleven other states have voiced their objection to the recent actions by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The group's denunciation comes after the Treasury authorized tech billionaire Elon Musk, and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to tap into highly sensitive payment systems that store private, personally identifiable information of U.S. citizens. According to the statement released yesterday, the move has sparked legal and privacy concerns.
"In the past week, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has given Elon Musk access to Americans’ personal private information, state bank account data, and other information that is some of our country's most sensitive data," the coalition stated. They underscored their position that despite Musk's financial standing and influence, the legal boundaries must remain sacred and the move by the Treasury was "unlawful, unprecedented, and unacceptable." Musk's DOGE had allegedly sought this access to stymie federal payments earmarked for key public services, ranging from health care to childcare.
"As the richest man in the world, Elon Musk is not used to being told ‘no,’ but in our country, no one is above the law," Mayes and the attorneys general emphasized, signaling their commitment to the defense of constitutional and privacy rights. The group communicates that their impending lawsuit intends to prevent what they see as an egregious abuse of power.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with Mayes in the statement are the attorneys general of key states, including New York, California, and Colorado, as well as Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Vermont. This coalition mirrors the emerging trend of states taking collective action on issues of national impact. Each state adds its voice to the chorus, affirming the need to safeguard what is seen as essential funding for community services which are, according to the collective statement, hanging in the balance.
