Carrboro is planning an update to Baldwin Park's playground equipment for children aged 2-5 and 6-12. This update is part of the Town's effort to provide safe and engaging spaces for residents. The playground will be closed until June 2025, but the community garden, pavilion, and basketball courts will remain open, according to the Town of Carrboro.
Baldwin Park has strong roots in the local Black community, named after Henry W. Baldwin, who donated the land through St. Joseph C.M.E. Church, later transferring ownership to the Town of Carrboro. The park's renovation focused on honoring this heritage. The Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Resources Department, in partnership with the Town's Planning and Communication Departments, distributed surveys and went door-to-door to engage residents. "Community engagement played a key role in shaping the playground improvement project," with 70% of respondents supporting the improvements, as reported by the Town of Carrboro.
Baldwin Park is undergoing renovations based on community input. The updates aim to create a safe, engaging, and inclusive playground for children of all abilities. Basketball games will continue during construction, and once the new structures are complete, accessibility will be improved. The project’s goal is to create a "welcoming and vibrant space for all residents," as stated by the Town of Carrboro.
