A violent confrontation that erupted after a football game in Federal Hill has culminated in a plea deal for 24-year-old Ravens fan John Callis. Found guilty of assaulting two men in a highly publicized incident followed by repeated violence, Callis has agreed to a sentence that includes five years of supervised probation and over $4,000 in restitution, reported CBS News Baltimore. The October 13, 2024, attack, which was caught on video, showed Callis wearing a Ravens jersey and assaulting two 23-year-old men after a game against the Washington Commanders.
The details of the assault reveal that after the victims, wearing Commanders Jerseys, fled and lost their belongings, including phones and a wallet, they were attacked again upon their return to retrieve their items. This second altercation also involved a third victim who tried to intervene. Callis' aggressive behavior left two victims with minor injuries, while the third sustained a concussion and memory loss, FOX Baltimore noted. During the bail hearing, Callis admitted to daily cocaine use, which included the day of the attack.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Callis, whose prior offenses include an "alcohol-fueled" assault and drunken assault in Towson and Delaware, respectively, is to serve ten years with 105 days served, though he will not remain incarcerated. Instead, he will undertake an inpatient drug treatment program in Sarasota, Florida, followed by outpatient treatment. Additionally, his rehabilitation includes 90 AA meetings, anger management classes, and 100 hours of community service in Baltimore. Furthermore, Callis is prohibited from sharing the viral video of assault on social media platforms.
Ivan Bates, the Baltimore City State's Attorney, expressed the significance of the plea, saying: "Today, defendant John Callis has pled guilty to three counts of Second-Degree Assault after having spent 105 days in jail, ensuring that justice has been served for the victims and reaffirming our commitment to holding all offenders accountable." He emphasized, "There is never a scenario in which violence is acceptable in our city. Today’s outcome clearly conveys that my office will not tolerate hate-filled acts." As reported by FOX Baltimore, this statement reinforces the city's stance against such acts of violence and its dedication to protecting victims' rights.
