A search and rescue operation in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park came to a conclusion yesterday when Ann Houghton, a 73-year-old hiker, was discovered deceased. The park's personnel alongside several other emergency agencies had launched a search after Houghton, a resident of Jackson County, North Carolina with over two decades of volunteer service at the park, was reported missing last Saturday, as first reported by WVLT.

Houghton's car was found at the Smokemont Campground last Saturday, prompting the focus of the search in that area. According to WATE, she was last seen last Tuesday and had an itinerary that included hiking the Bradley Fork, Chasteen Creek, Hughes Ridge, and Enloe Creek trails. Her remains were eventually located yesterday at 1:53 p.m., approximately a quarter mile off of the Enloe Creek Trail.

Charles Sellars, Acting Superintendent of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offered a statement obtained by multiple outlets including WBIR expressing condolences. "Ann was an enduring and beloved member of our Smokies Community. She was a dedicated volunteer and avid hiker who shared her passion for the park with many visitors," stated Sellars. Houghton had been notably recognized for her service in the park, having been nominated for a National Park Service George and Helen Hartzog Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 2022.

Participating in the search operations, investigations, and emergency services were Cherokee Fire and Rescue, Backcountry Search & Rescue, Macon Volunteer Fire Department, Cowee Volunteer Fire Department, Appalachian Mountain Rescue Team, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Houghton is remembered as someone deeply connected to the local park community and an individual who significantly contributed to the experiences of visitors for many years.
