Five men have been arrested in San Bernardino, California, for their alleged involvement in a cold-blooded murder-for-hire scheme that left a local businesswoman dead, a plot believed to have been orchestrated by her estranged husband amid a bitter divorce. The slain woman, identified as 44-year-old Yesenia Torres, was shot in broad daylight outside her restaurant, Burger Point, as horrified onlookers watched helplessly.
During a press conference, San Bernardino Police Chief Darren Goodman described the killing as a direct consequence of a "contentious divorce," according to CBS News. Surveillance footage presented by authorities showed the tragic moment on Jan. 10 when Torres was confronted by 31-year-old Gerardo Llamas who attempted to steal her purse and subsequently fired nine shots at her. In a chaotic turn of events, when a pedestrian tried to intervene, they became a target of Llamas' gunfire too. Torres bravely fought back but was ultimately chased around her car and shot multiple times as she tried to flee into her restaurant.
The other suspects include Torres' 53-year-old ex-husband, Sergio Revelas, and accomplices Arnoldo Ruelas, 54, Reynaldo Ruelas, 37, along with Juan Perez, 42. In a statement given to KTLA, Detective Dominick Martinez from the San Bernardino Police Department said, "There is evidence to show that the suspects did stalk the victim for several months before the murder."
All five men have been charged with murder, facing special circumstances including lying in wait, financial gain, and committing the crime during a robbery, San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson confirmed, as per CBS News. The suspects are set to appear in court on March 14.
