Boating enthusiasts in St. Tammany Parish were reminded of water dangers this weekend after a collision between two boats on Feb. 11 around 4:30 p.m. in Bayou Bonfouca. A 16-foot boat carrying three people crashed into a 19-foot boat towing a water skier. Two people from the smaller boat were thrown into the water without life jackets. Thankfully, the situation didn't get worse, but it highlighted the importance of safety on the water, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Assistance fell upon the occupants of the 19-foot boat, who managed to pull the two overboard individuals aboard their vessel, awaiting further help. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office was swift to respond, rushing the three injured passengers to ambulances on shore, with two being ferried to Lakeview Hospital in Mandeville and the other to University Medical Center in New Orleans; none of the parties on the larger boat required medical attention, a stark contrast to the fortunes of their waterborne counterparts, as reported by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
What now remains is the aftermath of the collision, where the waters of accountability must be navigated, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division has taken the helm as the leading investigative agency, striving to uncover the hows and whys of the collision, as it stands, charges have not been ruled out as the probe presses on, each detail promising to be a piece in the puzzle of prevention.
