A Brooklyn doctor has been sentenced to a maximum of six years in prison following convictions tied to the sexual abuse of a female patient. The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office announced that Jamil Ibrahim, 56, from Sunset Park, took advantage of a patient while in a position of trust during a clinic visit in Carroll Gardens. In a statement, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez expressed that the sentencing should bring some sense of closure to the victim and her family, condemning the abuse as a "betrayal."
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, the incident in question occurred on March 18, 2018, when a 47-year-old woman went to the Pro Health clinic for a sinus infection treatment. There, Ibrahim, leveraging his medical authority, sexually abused the patient, pressing his erect penis against her inner knee/thigh area repeatedly during the examination. This inappropriate behavior happened multiple times and was subsequently reported to the police by the distressed woman. Ibrahim was arrested a month later and was found to have later illegally obtained the woman's records from another clinic location in Bensonhurst, after his suspension from Pro Health.
Justice Phyllis Chu of the Brooklyn Supreme Court handed down the sentence today, convicting Ibrahim on January 21, for third-degree sexual abuse, third-degree burglary, and computer trespass. This comes after two other women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against the same doctor, testifying at the trial. One reported an unwarranted touching during an examination for a bladder and sinus infection in 2014, while another recounted an inappropriate comment and caress during a 2014 visit after an injury.
The case details, including testimonies of the victims, were laid bare during the trial. The prosecution, led by Senior Assistant District Attorneys Gwen Barnes and Chelsea Jacobi of the Special Victims Bureau, navigated the legal battle with testimony from the additional women to build their case against Ibrahim. The trial revealed not only the doctor's misconduct but also the courage of the victims to step forward and pursue justice. The DA's office extended gratitude towards Jennifer Hernandez, a paralegal supervisor, for her substantial contribution to the prosecution's efforts.
