Charlotte residents have a new way to get around town with the official launch of the Charlotte Area Transit System's (CATS) Microtransit service, CATS Micro. The service aims to provide an on-demand, shared-ride experience for the same price as a standard bus or rail trip. Starting from February 24, 2025, CATS Micro will be operational, initially serving areas within Northern Mecklenburg County, including Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, and Charlotte, as highlighted in a recent announcement by CATS.

In a bid to connect the bustling regions of Northern Mecklenburg County, which boast of diverse activity centres, employment hubs, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities, CATS Micro has been introduced to facilitate easier and more seamless commutes for its residents. Interim CATS CEO Brent Cagle underscored the significance of the service in an official release, stating, "This part of Mecklenburg County is full of activity centers, jobs, education centers, healthcare and more. CATS Micro will help in connecting customers seamlessly to these areas as well as each other." These comments emphasis the transit system’s role in strengthening community connectivity.

The collaboration between CATS, MV Transportation, and Spare reveals a concerted effort to improve urban mobility. MV Transportation is primarily responsible for the operations of CATS Micro, working in conjunction with the local group, My Little Helper. Spare's position is to furnish the technological back-end, providing a comprehensive mobility operations platform that allows for efficient scheduling and booking services crucial for modern microtransit systems. Through the CATS-Pass app integration, users can efficiently book their rides, as stated in the announcement by Charlotte Area Transit System.

The emphasis on technology distinguishes CATS Micro from traditional transit offerings. With the Spare trip booking tool's integration into the existing CATS-Pass app, riders now enjoy the convenience of scheduling their trips all in one place, simplifying the process and encouraging usage.
