In response to severe flooding in southeastern Kentucky, a team of 21 Charlotte firefighters from North Carolina Task Force Three was deployed last Sunday to assist with emergency operations. The team, led by Captain Jerry Rodgers, is joining other task forces from Asheville, Winston-Salem, and Task Force Eleven to help communities affected by heavy rain, flooding, and winter conditions, according to the City of Charlotte.
A rescue team was mobilized in response to an Emergency Management Assistance Compact request due to severe flooding and over 300 road closures in southeastern Kentucky. With temperatures dropping to 11°F and snow accumulation expected, conditions are worsening. "This deployment isn’t just about water rescues," said Division Chief Matt Westover. "With the extreme cold setting in, the conditions are going to be brutal." The team, equipped with boats, trucks, and UTVs, is prepared for various challenges. Captain Jerry Rodgers is leading the team through the difficult environment, with Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson noting, "Captain Rodgers’ leadership is invaluable in situations like this," as stated by the City of Charlotte.
Firefighters Andrew Graham, Dustin Reynolds, and Hector Rivera, along with other task force members, are preparing for a deployment to Kentucky. They will assist in water rescues using boats and sonar, as well as ground searches and community support. Equipped with rescue boats, life safety ropes, and dry suits. Chief Johnson praised the firefighters’ dedication, stating, “They don’t hesitate. They go where they’re needed, no matter the conditions, no matter the risk. And they represent Charlotte with honor every step of the way.” Westover added, “There’s a huge impact,” as reported by the City of Charlotte.
