Charlotte residents who have ever felt that piercing panic when a beloved pet slips out of sight may find solace in the latest efforts of the CMPD Animal Care & Control. Responding to the distressing issue of lost pets, a new position has been established that focuses on reuniting strays with their families, a move that promises a heartwarming resolution to an all-too-common urban tale of wandering paws.
According to an account by Melissa Knicely, Public Information Specialist at CMPD Animal Care & Control, an open gate was all it took for her world to turn upside down. In the time it takes to "snap," her three canine companions vanished from her view, leading to moments filled with frantic pursuit and dread. In an interview with CharlotteNC.gov, Knicely recalled the harrowing experience, the "tears falling down her face" as she desperately called for her dogs. Unfortunately, despite the fear and emotional turmoil, she managed to recover her pets, an outcome that isn't guaranteed for many in similar predicaments.
This personal experience acted as a catalyst for Knicely and her team. It underscored the need for a specialist role dedicated to the task of bringing lost pets back to their anxious owners. "It’s great to get animals adopted. It’s even better to get animals home," Knicely stated, acknowledging that many of the intakes at Animal Care & Control's Byrum Drive facility are stray animals. These cases consume a considerable amount of the organization's resources and space.
Efficient reunification processes benefit the community at multiple levels, relieving owners of agony, sparing pets from the stress of shelter life, and freeing up valuable shelter capacity. Knicely highlighted how the majority of animals they receive are strays, an issue that "takes up a significant portion of the resources and crates." Thus, the quicker these pets are returned, the better for everyone involved – pets, owners, and the facility itself, suggesting a vision of animal welfare that touches on prevention as much as it does on care.
