On Sunday, a sideshow erupted on the I-80 on and off-ramps near W. Grand Avenue and Maritime Avenue. A report from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Air Unit (H30) brought officers to the scene. As detailed in a social media post by the CHP Oakland, their timely response caused the gathering to scatter. However, one silver BMW 328i took this as a cue not for retreat but for reckless escalation, speeding off erratically and plunging eastward on W. Grand Avenue.
The pursuit that ensued reached dangerous speeds up to 120 MPH, leading the CHP to prioritize public safety by terminating the chase near Hegenberger Road. Nevertheless, H30 stayed vigilant, tracking the recklessly fleeing vehicle. This aerial persistence set the stage for a successful intercept as CHP Hayward Area officers employed a spike strip along I-880, thwarting the BMW's flight near Marina Boulevard. "The CHP will not tolerate any form of reckless driving," the CHP Oakland's post declared.
Judgment came swiftly for the occupants of the disabled vehicle, and they found themselves detained on the roadside.
