Last Friday, a notorious figure dubbed the "Clover Leaf Rapist" was sentenced to a lengthy prison term extending 82 years to life by the Honorable Maryanne Gilliard. The perpetrator, JD Simien, had previously been convicted on October 31, 2024, by a jury of harrowing crimes that included two counts of kidnapping with intent to commit another crime, forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual battery by restraint, and assault with intent to commit various forms of sexual assault, as reported by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office on their official website.
The convictions that led to Simien's downfall were precipitated by a chain of events rooted in fear and violence. On the night of December 10, 2013, the first victim faced an unspeakable ordeal after being accosted while walking from a bus stop. DNA evidence found on rape kits and clothing was a key factor that enabled the authorities to conclusively link Simien to the crimes. Despite the years that had passed, advanced investigative techniques, specifically Investigative Genetic Genealogy, were used to finally bring Simien to justice ten years after his reign of terror, as reported by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
Details obtained by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office reveal that Simien employed threats to enforce silence among his victims. The first victim was threatened with death if she dared to report the crime after being strangled and raped. Similarly, after a violent confrontation that included stabbing and strangulation, the second victim was coldly warned that Simien would find her if she went to the authorities. According to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, the jury also found true allegations that included the elements of kidnapping, victimizing multiple individuals, and the use of a knife in the commission of these heinous acts.
