Yesterday, Conroe ISD Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null announced that the plan to phase out the district's two-way immersion dual language program has been paused. This decision came after strong community support during the school board meeting. The dual language program, which pairs English-speaking students with Spanish-speaking students to promote bilingualism and cultural exchange, has been a vital resource. Over 80 parents attended the meeting to voice concerns over the potential end of the program, according to Click2Houston.

"Ultimately, everything that happens around here is my responsibility. I am not proud of our process," Dr. Null told Chron. The community’s strong disapproval of the district's handling of the situation was clear, with attendees cheering for comments in support of the program. Though the recommendation to discontinue the program has been put on hold, concerns about challenges such as enrollment and budget remain. Dr. Null emphasized that these issues need to be addressed for the program to continue.

The dual language program has faced difficulties, including declining enrollment starting in third grade, as well as budget and staffing challenges. These factors had led the district to consider ending the program. However, the community’s response has reignited discussions on the importance of maintaining the program.

Petitions were circulated quickly, and many parents attended the meeting demanding better communication. "We were not informed about this change. It was upsetting to hear about the program’s possible end without having a chance to discuss it or understand the reasons behind it," Maria, a parent, told Click2Houston. Many others shared similar feelings. Dr. Null has asked the community to join discussions to address the financial and staffing challenges, confirming and stressing the issues did not arise without cause.

As the situation unfolds, the Conroe ISD community remains committed to advocating for educational programs like the dual language initiative.
