A recent pursuit in Monroe led to the arrest of a convicted felon, identified as Delco Philip Covington, 38, after he attempted to evade Monroe Police. According to WBTV, Covington was observed by detectives getting into a car on English Street, at which point they endeavored to stop him knowing his driver's license was suspended. However, Covington chose instead to lead the officers on a chase.
During the pursuit, which unfolded around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2, police assert Covington was seen throwing out items from the vehicle, which were later revealed to be a handgun, crack cocaine, and over 150 grams of marijuana. Covington's attempt to hastily discard evidence did not preclude his apprehension on Fairley Avenue, where the discarded items were subsequently recovered by the detectives, as per the WSOC-TV report.
Following his arrest, Covington now faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon, intent to sell and deliver both marijuana and cocaine, along with possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional allegations made against him include resisting law enforcement, littering, and speeding to elude arrest. He is currently detained in the Union County Detention Center, under a $60,000 bond.
The Monroe Police Department took to Facebook to acknowledge the operation's success, commending the officers involved for their "proactive police work" which they stated as being vital to sustaining the safety of the community. "This is yet another example of how proactive police work helps to keep our communities safer for all residents," the department expressed in a post on its official page, according to the details provided by the Monroe Police Department.
