The Georgia Department of Corrections has undergone a leadership change with the promotion of Curtis Todd, formerly the Superintendent at Emanuel Probation Detention Center (PDC), to a role assisting the Warden at Smith State Prison. His new position influences both the inner workings of the facility and the lives of those within its walls. Effective yesterday, Todd assumes the role of Special Assistant to the Warden, overseeing the facility’s daily operations, staff management, and offender management.
According to an announcement by Commissioner Tyrone Oliver on the GDC's website, "Curtis has been a dedicated team member and exceptional leader during his tenure with the agency. We look forward to seeing him continue to excel as he applies his wealth of knowledge to the efficient operations as Special Assistant to the Warden at Smith SP." This move reflects the department's confidence in Todd's extensive background in correctional management which began in 2013 as a Correctional Officer.
Over the course of more than a decade, Todd's career charted a steady rise through the ranks, from his start at the Smith Transitional Center (TC) as a Correctional Officer to taking on increasing responsibilities as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and eventually Assistant Superintendent at both Emanuel PDC and Smith TC. His promotion, in 2024, to Superintendent at Emanuel PDC served as a prelude to his current appointment.
Education and training are vital components to Todd's expertise, and they have prepared him for a breadth of challenges in correctional facility management. Todd holds a diploma in wildlife management from Ogeechee Technical College, and his departmental training is robust, with certifications in Basic Correctional Officer Training, Supervision I, II, and III, Sergeant Academy, Lieutenant Academy, Chief of Security Academy, Mental Health Training, Assistant Superintendent Training,, and Effective Communication. Todd's comprehensive educational foundation will be a resource relied upon in his role as Special Assistant to the Warden.
As Curtis Todd transitions into his new position at Smith State Prison, his previous experience and training will play a role in facility operations and management. The department's leadership, prison staff, and offenders will observe how his tenure unfolds and impacts the prison's future.
