To enrich the community's connection to its history, the Dallas Office of Arts and Culture has released a new tool: an augmented reality app called Freedom Trail App: Deep Ellum AR Experience. Launched amid fanfare at the Deep Ellum Community Center, the app promises to guide residents and visitors through a digitally enhanced tour of Dallas's storied past, mainly focusing on the black cultural heritage that shaped the neighborhood and city.
This interactive journey spans from the 1860s to the modern era, shedding light on the deep-seated impact of slavery and the ongoing saga of racial equity in Dallas. Officials leading the ceremony spoke of the app's significance for cultural education and alignment with the city's larger goals of addressing racial and socioeconomic disparities. The Freedom Trail App ties into the 2018 Dallas Cultural Plan and the city's Racial Equity Plan, which is aimed at confronting these issues.
According to the City of Dallas, the app is now free to download from the App Store and Google Play stores. It offers a first-hand look at vital histories that have often gone untold.
