The Detroit Zoo is asking people to donate old electronics to help save wild gorillas. The zoo is participating in a recycling challenge called Gorillas on the Line… Answer the Call. The challenge encourages organizations to compete in collecting devices for gorilla conservation. The zoo works with SAFE Gorilla to refurbish devices that can be sold and recycles the rest through certified partners, according to Detroit Free Press.
Last year, 2,792 electronic devices were collected, setting a North American record. The collected devices helped raise money for gorilla conservation. Aaron Jesue, a DZS zookeeper and program organizer, said, "We know we can make an even bigger impact this year — but we need your help," as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
The zoo is holding a device collection challenge until September 1, aiming to collect more electronics than last year. Devices can be dropped off in boxes at the zoo’s gateways or through community collection partnerships. The effort has raised $48,000 to support organizations like the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Aaron Jesue stated, “By participating, you’re not only keeping electronic waste out of landfills —you’re also playing a direct role in protecting endangered gorillas in the wild,” as stated by WXYZ.
