El Paso has witnessed the heavy hand of justice brought down on a member of the criminal organization known as "La Empresa." 28-year-old Luis Edward Castro has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in federal prison for his involvement in a chilling hostage-taking scheme.
What transpired was straight out of a crime drama yet all too real, the victim was forcefully abducted from a motel room in Juarez, Mexico on August 24, 2023. For nearly two weeks, the victim's family was terrorized with demands for payment, pushing them to hand over roughly $9,000 for his safe release, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Castro had been pivotal to the operation, not only by brandishing a weapon during the kidnapping but also by creating proof-of-life videos, which he sent to the already distraught family. The footage showed the victim looking petrified and claiming he was being held in El Paso. This maneuver was meant to coerce the family, a tactic that regrettably succeeded.
It was the diligent work of law enforcement that put an end to the ordeal; they located Castro at an address linked to him, where a search uncovered six undocumented noncitizens and an array of firearms. Upon his arrest on September 5, 2023, Castro faced multiple charges, including the harboring and transporting of undocumented noncitizens, hostage taking, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. On September 26, 2024, he entered a guilty plea for the hostage-taking charge.
