In a concerted effort to crack down on gun violence, federal indictments have rolled out this week for five individuals over allegations of unlawful gun possession. According to a recent announcement from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of North Carolina, Acting U.S. Attorney Lawrence J. Cameron highlighted the work as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a national initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. In a statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office, one of the five individuals is also up against drug charges, further complicating his legal woes.

For a community striving to live free from the threat of gun violence, the PSN program brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. A shotgun, a rifle, and ammunition were among the items seized from Rex Allen Hawkins, a 53-year-old from Traphill, N.C., during a probation search. They operate under the belief that removing illegal firearms from those who shouldn't have them in the first place is a step toward safer streets. "Protecting communities across Western North Carolina is one of our highest priorities," said Acting U.S. Attorney Cameron. "We will continue to enforce federal firearms laws and partner with law enforcement to remove illegal guns from our streets and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The charged individuals are facing various counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, while some face additional charges. Jonathan Glendale Denton, 41, from Charlotte, is also facing drug-related charges, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Alongside Denton, the list includes Rex Allen Hawkins, Mitchell Clydero Patterson, 37, of Spring Lake, Anthony Dion Tribble, 27, of Charlotte, and Timothy Demetrius Williams, 34, who has also been charged with possession of a stolen firearm. It’s notable that the allegations in the indictments still leave these individuals innocent until proven guilty just as the law requires.

The illicit dance of drug trafficking often partners with firearm possession, a combination federal law seeks to disrupt. Each of the accused has been barred from possessing a firearm due to prior convictions, ranging from drug offenses to violent crime. As part of its comprehensive approach, Project Safe Neighborhoods works to educate and organize communities with resources like those found on ATF's website. In the fight against illegal gun possession, this collaborative legal tapestry aims to reduce violence and improve the quality of life for residents.
