
The Nevada Department of Corrections has reported the deaths of five inmates, all occurring within a short period spanning from late January to early February this year. Among the deceased are three individuals convicted of murder, with their cases and sentences varying in severity.
According to information released by Fox5 Vegas, one of the deceased, John Stinchfield, passed away on February 5 at Ely State Prison. Stinchfield, aged 50, was serving a lengthy sentence of 576 months to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder and attempted murder. He had been in the custody of the Nevada Department of Corrections since December 2000, transferred from Lyon County.
Dennis Kopp, 72, passed away at Carson Tahoe Medical Center last Sunday. According to the Review-Journal, Kopp was an inmate at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center, serving a 120- to 300-month sentence for second-degree murder. Police records indicate that Kopp admitted to shooting his wife in their Henderson home in 2016, a confession he made during a 911 call.
Another inmate, Charles Walker, 46, passed away last Saturday at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs. Walker was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, along with additional charges of robbery and conspiracy to commit a violent crime, as reported by Fox5 Vegas. The outlet also noted the death of inmate Anthony Silveria, 62, who died the same day at Northern Nevada Correctional Center. Silveria was serving a 60- to 152-month sentence for grand larceny and burglary after being transferred to the Nevada Department of Corrections from Douglas County in October 2023.
Rounding out the group of inmates who passed away is Orlando Mays, 41, who died at Renown Medical Center on January 25. Mays had been serving a sentence of 36 to 120 months for possession of a controlled substance at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City after his transfer from Clark County in October 2023, according to the Review-Journal.
