Daniel L. Ritchie, the former chancellor of the University of Denver who played a pivotal role in the institution's revival, has died at 93. Ritchie, who served as DU's chancellor from 1989 to 2005, was remembered for his transformative leadership and unwavering support of the university, both during and after his tenure, as detailed by DU.
During his time at DU, Ritchie donned the chancellor's red vest and immediately set to work addressing a financial crisis and declining enrollment numbers, his impact on the university cannot be overstated from mobilizing more than $400 million for infrastructure improvements to presenting the institution with parts of his Grand River Ranch, which in one instance fetched $15 million for DU's coffers. His contributions also extended to academics and athletics, as he established the Cherrington Global Scholars program and advanced DU's Denver Pioneers to NCAA Division I Athletics.
Ritchie's post-chancellorship years remained interwoven with the university as he served as chairman of DU’s Board of Trustees and later endowed scholarships and funded buildings, like the Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science in honor of his father.
