A balcony collapse in Silver Lake injured four people and left a canine unscathed late Saturday night. Eyewitnesses and local authorities provided a timeline of the incident, pinpointing the collapse to around 11:20 p.m. on the 800 block of Robinson Street. According to KTLA, residents were rattled as a balcony, three stories high, crumbled, trapping those above in a precarious balance on the remnants.
One resident, John McCauley, shared his immediate reaction with KTLA, "We heard a boom in the night, and we got out of bed. We had just gone to bed." Despite the collapse happening directly under them, they were not injured. His wife’s quick thinking led to using sheets to rescue the occupants, who, along with furniture, were trapped in the compromised structure. One woman, seen touching her arm gingerly, was taken to the hospital. Her condition has not been detailed, but she was observed walking out of the ambulance on her own volition.
The ABC7 report revealed that, thankfully, no one was on the balcony below when the deterioration led to a steep incline of the structure above. Neighbors witnessing the event instantly joined efforts to aid those affected. "We all heard a big commotion and came outside, and the balcony was just gone," a neighbor told ABC7.
The Los Angeles Fire Department was quick to arrive, managing the technical rescue, while city fire trucks lined the neighborhood streets, a scene captured in footage obtained by KTLA. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department per FOX LA, while one person was hospitalized in fair condition, other individuals declined medical treatment. The dog present during the balcony collapse also emerged without injuries. As for the remaining residents, McCauley commented, "They were a little shaken up, but everybody is just so grateful that everyone is healthy and safe."
Inspectors from the L.A. Department of Building and Safety hinted at the possibility that recent heavy rains could have compromised the structural integrity of the balcony. At present, the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
