According to an announcement on the Fulton County website, Chief Judge Glanville of the Fulton County Superior Court is slated to officiate a ceremonial signing of the new protocol at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Fulton County Government Center’s Assembly Hall. This event is seen as a major step forward in addressing a problem that has long plagued schools by disrupting the educational process and hindering student success.
The devised protocol provides a clear progression for spotting, reporting, digging into, and addressing supposed breaches of the state's school attendance laws. The Fulton County Student Attendance and School Climate Committee, which is behind the initiative, has garnered support from both state and local stakeholders, educational leaders, and community programs, all uniting under the common goal of bolstering school attendance and fostering a supportive learning atmosphere.
Executive Board members Lashawnda Woods-Roberts, Sarah Babcock, and Margaret Schweizer expressed their appreciation for the Committee members' commitment to creating proactive solutions. In a statement, they thanked the members "for their dedication to finding proactive solutions that help every student thrive in welcoming schools with fewer unexcused absences."
Collaborating entities, such as the Fulton County Superior Court, Fulton County Juvenile Court, Atlanta Public Schools, and Fulton County Schools, have all played a part in this concerted effort, according to the Committee. With this new attendance protocol, Fulton County takes a step not merely in promoting adherence to laws, but in embracing the broader vision of an equitable education system where every student is given the chance to succeed.
