Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, a Democrat known for making headlines, has officially entered the Michigan governor's race. He is eyeing the spot vacated by term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2026. In a move from law enforcement to potential state leadership, Swanson is focusing his gubernatorial bid on addressing pressing voter concerns such as immigration and public safety—a platform he believes will appeal to Michigan's diverse electorate.

After gaining national recognition for marching with protesters in 2020 and speaking at the Democratic National Convention, Swanson has shifted his aim from Genesee County to the entirety of Michigan, as reported by The Associated Press. "As a sheriff, I take care of people. I protect people, I serve and I bring folks together," Swanson stated. "Now, it’s time to do it for the entire state of Michigan and all 10 million people."

Swanson isn't the only Democrat in the race. He'll join Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the primary, and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II is also considering a bid. On the Republican side, Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt is featuredAs the Detroit Free Press reported, Detroit's once-Democratic Mayor Mike Duggan is stirring the political pot by becoming independent.

Launching his campaign at Mott Community College with party lights, a DJ, and enthusiastic supporters, Swanson brought what he calls "pure energy" to the event. And energy isn't all he's promising. Swanson aims to bring a customer service mindset to the governor's office, proposing a network of sheriffs across the state to extend a helping hand to constituents in need. "If that sheriff can’t solve it, that sheriff should be able to pick up a phone and talk to somebody who can," Swanson stated, according to Michigan Advance.
