School choice's opponents, according to Abbott, engage in misrepresentation out of desperation. With Texas families across various demographics and socioeconomic backgrounds in mind, he touted the universal school choice program's merits, emphasizing the continued full funding of public education and the increased $15,000 per-student funding, feeling the proximity of victory. "But you can tell that we are winning. You can tell that the fight is over because there is a process that shows you the end is near. That is when your opponents have nothing else to resort to other than lying about the facts," Abbott told the summit attendees, as noted by the Governor's Office.
At the summit, over 500 people heard Governor Abbott talk about the school choice program's structure, which promises to empower parents, including those who homeschool, to have control over their children’s curriculum. Tying the education initiative with broader concerns, Abbott also assured that reducing property taxes remains a high priority, proposing stricter controls on local tax increases and requiring two-thirds voter approval for hikes.
Border security, an issue that continuously garners attention in Texas, wasn't omitted from Abbott's speech. Echoing commitments made previously, he pledged ongoing cooperation with what were the efforts of the Trump Administration to tighten the U.S.-Mexico border, expressly intended against foreigners looking to cross without authorization, with Abbott claiming measures to ensure its security over the next four decades. This reiteration ties into his broader agenda of declaring school choice as an emergency item, which he announced previously during his State of the State Address, as per a statement from the Governor's Office.
