Grand Haven Area Public Schools (GHAPS) has made a strategic move to repurpose Mary A. White Elementary School into an early learning center beginning the 2025-2026 school year. According to WZZM 13, the transition is part of the district's plan to address a projected enrollment decline of nearly 650 students over the next five years.

The new center will house preschool development, Great Start Readiness Program, Young Fives, and Early Childhood Special Education programs. This nature-based program plans to foster enhanced early childhood education while making use of the district's facilities more efficiently. Nonetheless, there's unrest amongst local residents like Robyn Cook who told WZZM 13 about their exclusion from this significant change, emphasizing, "The community was not involved. This was dropped on us very unexpectedly."

Students currently enrolled at Mary A. White Elementary will be reassigned to other schools within the district based on their home addresses. WOOD TV reports that the geographic distribution will send students west of Beacon Boulevard to Rosy Mound Elementary, those on the north side of River Haven to Peach Plains Elementary, and those on south end of River Haven to Robinson Elementary. In addition, GHAPS will hold an information session for parents concerned about the transition to help mitigate their worries about the future of their children’s education.

Looking ahead, GHAPS is planning a series of family open-house events at new schools to welcome Mary A. White students and families. The Grand Haven Tribune adds that these events, along with a Kindergarten Roundup on March 4, aim to facilitate a smooth transition for affected families. Perkowski, while acknowledging the challenges of change, remains optimistic, believing that it also brings new opportunities. Amidst the district's vision of expanding early learning opportunities, many are left to ponder whether future decisions will incorporate the voices of the community more transparently.
