Firefighters in Grand Rapids responded to a fire last night at G.R. Central Iron and Steel, a metal supply company on Alpine Avenue NW. Fire crews worked throughout the night to control the blaze. WOODTV reports the fire was first reported around 5:41 p.m., and crews arrived quickly. The Grand Rapids Fire Department later determined the building, which housed welding and gas cylinders, was a total loss.

No injuries were reported, as building occupants safely evacuated when the fire was discovered. A worker noticed smoke and initially tried to manage the fire before realizing its severity, prompting a call to the fire department, Assistant Chief Keith Borreson confirmed to FOX 17. All units from the Grand Rapids Fire Department, along with Walker firefighters, responded. They used 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames while dealing with icy conditions.

Grand Rapids Fire Marshal Bill Smith told WZZM13 that the building suffered significant damage. While the exterior walls held up, Smith noted that the roof would need to be replaced. He also explained that the cold temperatures made it difficult for firefighters, as they were covered in ice, which affected their mobility. Salt was spread at the scene to help with the conditions.

G.R. Central Iron and Steel, a company in Grand Rapids since 1947, now faces a major setback. Despite the damage, the company’s owner is determined to resume operations by today, as reported by WZZM13. "They're a pretty big business. They've been in operation for a very long time, very much part of the community here," Smith said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the damage has delayed the process.
