Spring Valley's quest for a new communal hub advanced yesterday as county officials and local citizens broke ground on a fresh Casa de Oro Library location. In a move to bolster the current community amenities, the new library, situated at 9610 Campo Road near Spring Valley Academy, promises to become the neighborhood's cornerstone quickly.
The quest for extra space and better facilities seems to have come to fruition; the new edifice will spread its literary offerings across a generous 12,000 square feet, doubling the size of the old venue. The library will feature all modern amenities – from public computers and laptops available to check out to high-speed internet and Wi-Fi. Also planned is a community room, accessible after hours for events, alongside dedicated spaces for teens, children, and a Friends of the Library Bookstore, according to information provided by the County of San Diego.
In 2022 alone, the Casa de Oro branch witnessed nearly 30,000 bibliophiles pass through its doors, taking home over 63,250 items. The future library extends beyond just books and internet access; it will include a teen area with study rooms, a children's section equipped with early literacy play equipment, and an inviting patio space.
The construction phase will begin in winter 2025, and the community can expect to saunter through the new library doors by spring 2026. The County has made strides to ensure that the structure serves its purpose and does so sustainably; the library will be built to Zero Net Energy and LEED Gold standards, which will allow it to generate its electrical requirements with solar panels. This level of citizen-oriented planning was honed through engagement with residents and feedback that helped shape the library's design and features.
