Haywood County drivers may notice construction crews lining up along U.S. 276 as they jumpstart a multi-million-dollar project aimed at transforming the well-trodden road into a safer, more streamlined corridor. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has enlisted the services of WNC Paving, which will now begin scoping out the landscape before the heavy machinery rolls in to turn plans into pavement. The company, with a hefty $38.5 million contract clutched in hand, will lead the charge in overhauling a stretch of U.S. 276 stretching from its nexus with U.S. 19 to just shy of the I-40 underpass, with a promised finish line of November 11, 2028.
Improvements are diverse and focused, enhancing not just the road's face but its function and flow, from paving broader shoulders to extending turn lanes—maneuvers designed to swell capacity and cut down on the perilous dance of lane changing. The conversion of various median openings into reduced conflicts intersections is vying to temper speeds and, according to a statement obtained by NCDOT, will ideally "reduce speeds and conflict points." Additional project details reveal plans for U-turn bulb outs and turning a certain interchange with U.S. 19 into a two-lane roundabout, a modern-day trend in traffic control.
Not one to idle while the ink dries, the first major leg of this ambitious modernization, starting sometime in March, will see a slice of the upcoming roundabout etched out alongside the installation of new pipes and drainage features. Drivers should brace for inconsistencies in their commutes, though only in the form of "minimal delays," and, according to the same NCDOT announcement, incidental daytime lane closures are on the books. But fear not for the youth and their academic punctuality, for the contract guarantees a construction-free window during school drop-off and pick-up rushes.
