The Hickory Elks Lodge 1654 recently held its Americanism Awards Ceremony, where it honored local public servants for their exceptional work and dedication to the community. During the event, awards were presented to individuals from the fire, police, and public services departments, as well as recognition for military service.

In a tradition designed to recognize duty and honor, the ceremony, which took place on Saturday, named Senior Firefighter Jonathan Holden as the 2025 Exceptional Firefighter of the Year. Holden, who began his career with the City of Hickory in the Public Services Department and later transitioned to the Fire Department in 2014, is currently on Rescue 1 on B Shift. His work, especially in expanding the department's rescue capabilities and designing new rescue apparatus, has proven to significantly raise the standard of emergency response services within the community.

According to the official announcement by the City of Hickory, Holden has also shown immense dedication by volunteering his expertise for the betterment of training programs, such as water rescue certification classes. Hickory Fire Chief Matt Hutchinson commended Holden, stating, "He exemplifies the fire department's core values of forward thinking, integrity, resilience, and excellence through service."

Similarly, Master Police Officer Trent Rothlin was chosen by his colleagues to be the 2025 Exceptional Police Officer of the Year. With over a decade of service, MPO Rothlin is recognized for his professionalism and dedication to his specialized role as a canine handler, courageously acting during a critical incident that involved officers coming under fire. His leadership qualities are not just evident in dire situations but also through the mentorship he provides to his team. Police Chief Reed Baer noted, "His commitment to his coworkers and the community has built trust and respect," as detailed by the City of Hickory's release.

The ceremony also recognized Joey Corn as the 2025 Exceptional Hickory City Public Service Person of the Year. Corn has worked for the city since 2001 and leads critical utility repair and installation projects. The acknowledgment reflects his dedication and tireless efforts to maintain essential services for the community in any conditions. Public Utilities Director Will Hamblin lauded Corn for his quality work and reliable leadership.

Alongside these outstanding city servants, the ceremony also took time to honor those who serve in a different capacity. Hickory Regional Airport Manager and Lieutenant Commander Chad Hunsucker was praised as the 2025 Exceptional Military Service Person of the Year for his service in the United States Navy. This recognition, again upheld by the Elks Lodge, marks the broader scope of service celebrated by the community. The City of Hickory expressed its pride and gratitude towards these individuals and the Elks Lodge for its continuous effort in acknowledging the dedication of those who serve.
