More than 400 seniors from across Hillsborough County gathered to honor and celebrate Black heritage, unified by a sea of the traditional Mardi Gras colors - purple, green, and gold. The festive occasion, hosted by Aging Services, welcomed participants from 21 senior centers and dining and activity centers, all converging in an event that was not just a celebration but a blend of cultures and nationalities, as reported by Hillsborough County's newsroom.
The event was inspired by Mardi Gras, celebrating the contributions of African American culture to the festival. Participants wore masks, beads, and feathers in the traditional colors. Each senior center's group entered the dance floor like a Mardi Gras parade, dressed to represent their center, highlighting both diversity and unity.
A particularly touching moment unfolded when 95-year-old Bellona Stephen from the Gardenville Senior Dining & Activity Center shared a poem about friendship, highlighting the profound bonds that are fostered in such gatherings. "There was no shortage of friendship," reflects the celebration that, for many seniors, provides a necessary connection — a remedy to solitude and a beacon for longevity and health, as per Hillsborough County's newsroom.
The celebration featured plenty of music and dance, with seniors enjoying line dancing. Rooted in African American culture, line dancing was a joyful way to celebrate life and share stories across generations.
