
Hilo police are investigating a homicide after a shooting on Wednesday morning. At around 5:00 a.m., officers responded to a call on the 1600 block of Maunakai Street and found a man with a gunshot wound to his torso, according to the Hawai‘i Police Department.
A man was declared dead at 9:39 a.m. at Hilo Benioff Medical Center after paramedics tried to revive him. His identity is not yet known as police are working to identify him and inform his family. An autopsy will be done to find the cause of death, and the case is being investigated as a second-degree murder, as reported by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
Detective Amy Omaya from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section is leading the investigation into a shooting. She is asking anyone with information or who was near Maunakai Street around the time of the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers, which offers a reward of up to $1,000 for information that helps in the case, as stated by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
