Houston residents have been facing rising gas bills this winter. Many, including retiree Yvette Harvey, experienced significant increases. CenterPoint Energy clarified that the increase is due to the 'Gas Cost Adjustment,' which reflects changes in market prices. Harvey's bill went from $100 to $335.84. "I went into panic mode with my initial thought. I’m like, how am I going to pay this, this amount of money?," she told Click2Houston.

CenterPoint Energy responded by explaining that the 'Gas Cost Adjustment' is a pass-through charge based on market conditions and does not provide any profit to the company. This adjustment, reviewed twice a year, has resulted in an 18% increase. CenterPoint Energy does not make a profit from the Gas Cost Adjustment charge; it is passed on to the customer at the exact cost, the company explained in a Click2Houston report.

In addition to the gas bill issue, CenterPoint Energy has also launched a new outage tracker to help residents during potential power disruptions. This tool, introduced after Hurricane Beryl, provides real-time updates every five minutes and includes weather integration, according to KHOU11.

For those facing high bills, CenterPoint Energy encourages customers to contact customer service for assistance. It's important to note that the Public Utility Commission of Texas does not regulate natural gas prices, as they fall under the Railroad Commission of Texas. Gas prices are determined by supply and demand, beyond regulatory control. Customers like Joe, who saw his bill rise from $56 to $136, have been encouraged to use energy conservation programs to manage costs.
