Major changes are coming to Hunting Park Avenue as the Streets Department gears up to kick off the bridge removal and fill-in project. The new bridge between Whitaker Avenue & G Street is slated to close for vehicular traffic starting Monday next week, the department's commissioner Kristin Del Rossi announced. The project involves the demolition of the bridge, backfilling the area with earth, replacing roadway cross-sections, and utility relocation, among other tasks. "The scope of this project includes the demolition and removal of the bridge superstructure and portions of its substructure, backfilling the existing bridge area with earth fill, and removal and replacement of the roadway cross-section," according to the City of Philadelphia announcement.
South State Inc. is undertaking construction efforts, which are expected to be completed by Fall 2025. The project has a budget of $1.7 million, funded through State Act 13 and City Capital funds. By staging the construction activities, the bridge will remain accessible throughout the construction, allowing pedestrians to rest easy.
Detours for eastbound and westbound traffic have been planned. Motorists will be redirected along Whitaker Avenue, Luzerne Street, and G Street in their respective directions. Motorists should know alternate routes and the additional travel time expected due to the detour.
Advance notice signs about the closure have already been placed, while detour signage will guide drivers around the construction zone. Temporary "No Parking" signs might appear for specific dates linked to the construction schedule. Cars parked in violation risk being towed, and owners should contact the local Police District to find towed vehicles.
