An officer at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Center was the target of an alleged attempted homicide, which is now under investigation by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). The incident, involving incarcerated person Nelson Barrera and an improvised weapon, took place yesterday afternoon, just before the clock struck half-past four.
Wearing a protective vest that was struck twice, the officer managed to escape the situation unharmed and alerted other staff members for help. After the assault, Barrera barricaded himself in his cell, as reported by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. After several failed attempts to convince Barrera to surrender the weapon voluntarily, he sustained injuries to his arms and hands when punching a security window.
Barrera eventually handed over two improvised weapons and cooperated with being handcuffed without the use of force. He received medical attention from the institution's medical staff at the Triage Treatment Area. The officer who was attacked has since been medically cleared and is recuperating at home. Barrera has been relocated to a different correctional facility while the circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be scrutinized by prison officials. The San Diego County District Attorney's Office might see the case for potential felony charges.
