A tragic turn of events unfolded in Irvine as a man succumbed to injuries sustained from a traffic collision, the Irvine Police Department reported. At approximately 3:34 p.m. on the outskirts of UC Irvine's campus, emergency services were summoned to a grim scene at the intersection of Campus Drive and Turtle Rock Drive.
The victim was the lone occupant of a 2022 Chevrolet Equinox SUV that, after striking the curb, overturned and came to rest on its roof. Orange County Fire Authority personnel attended to the driver on-site before rushing him to a medical facility, where he was later declared deceased. According to the City of Irvine's press release, investigators believe a medical emergency might have led to the fatal incident.
As the Irvine community grapples with this loss, the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) of the IPD is diligently working to piece together the circumstances that led to the accident. They have yet to release the identity of the driver as next-of-kin notifications are still pending. The IPD is also calling on anyone who might have witnessed the incident or possess additional information to come forward.
